Come along for a relaxed morning with Stefanie Koens, winner of the Banjo Prize for Fiction, as she talks about her haunting debut novel Daughters of Batavia, published by HarperCollins Australia. The story hops between Amsterdam in 1628 and Western Australia in 2018, following Tess McCarthy, an English teacher who heads to the remote Abrolhos Islands looking for answers about the Batavia shipwreck and her own family. What begins as a bit of maritime curiosity becomes a tale that spans generations, linking Tess to Saskia, a young Dutch woman aboard the doomed Batavia, and Aris Jansz, the ship's under surgeon, while quietly probing loss, resilience and the ways love and truth keep bobbing back up to the surface.
Free to attend, though spaces are limited so bookings are recommended. When: Saturday 13 September 2025, 10:30 am to 11:30 am. Where: Bunbury Public Library, 2 Parkfield St, Bunbury WA 6230.
