Geologist Mike Freeman is returning for another go at whisking us back in time to uncover the story behind Bunbury's basalt rocks, which have been quietly minding their own business for eons.

Picture this: about 130 million years ago, India was pulling away from the old East Gondwana crew, and volcanoes were busy spewing basalt lava that sloshed along river valleys northward to what was then the ocean, right through the spot where Bunbury now sits. These days, the basalt is mostly buried under fresher layers of earth, but clever geoscientists have ways to track it down. Mike's talk will chat through what these rocks are like, how far they stretch, and amusingly enough, how they nudged things along to help set up the city we know today. It's a free event, but you'll need to register to snag a spot. Happening on Saturday 22 November 2025 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at the Bunbury Museum and Heritage Centre, 1 Arthur St, Bunbury WA 6230, Australia.
